Becoming a New Referee
To become a Soccer Referee, you must attend a certification class and pass a written test.
You must be at least 12 years of age to work as a Soccer Referee. (You can take the class when you are 11.)
Click on "Clinic Search" and find a "New Referee Grade 8" class that fits your schedule.
Then go back to the home page and click on the left side of the page "Online Registration"
You must first register with the state and pay $65 on line (print your receipt). In 24 hours you will receive an email accepting your application. You can now register for a clinic. Browse and choose a New Referee Grade 8 clinic. Once again print your receipt for the class.
There are two options for initial certification, Grade 9 or Grade 8. A Grade 8 Referee can work all levels of youth matches. A Grade 9 can not be the Center Referee for any travel games and can be the Center Referee only for U-12 or younger recreation games. Also, a Grade 9 Referee can only work U-14 and younger Assistant Referee assignments. If you start with Grade 9, the club recommends that you upgrade to Grade 8 when you are required to recertify.
All referees are required to recertify annually. The club will usually hosts at least one recertification course prior to the start of each season. An announcement of the time and date will be posted on the club website. To sign up for this course, you will still be required to follow the procedures outlined above with the Metro VA/DC State Referee Program.
FCSC's colors are Black and White. So, if you plan on working FCSC recreational matches, please purchase a YELLOW referee shirt. Referee uniform kits are available through many on-line sources and will costs approximately $40 or less.
